A FREE site, Digital Book Index , looks better every day. Are we the last generation of readers? I’m a book nut. I read them, buy them, and review them. Now, I get them free, read them, and store them on digital shelf space.
We moved cross country three times in three years. I owned several hundred books of all types and sizes…and weights. Moving companies charge by the pound. I donated a BUNCH.
If you’re into books, take a look atDigital Book Index. I’s a bookophile’s or bibliophile’s dream. They describe themselves as, “A union catalog of electronic books, texts, and documents.” Their reputation is growing and so is their database.
Right now, the Digital Book Index claims to have almost 150K titles in their catalog, representing nearly 2000 commercial and non-commercial publishers, universities and private sites. They say 93,000 of the titles are available at no cost and the rest have reasonable price tags.
The site is free, but you have to register to use it. They take your name and email address – and they’ll share that with other e-publishers unless you opt out of the sharing.
Then it’s off to the races for the bibliophile who loves reference books, literature, language, history, social science, medical stuff, math and sciences, philosophy and religion, law, the arts, kids material, business, computer info and a plethora of other topics. You can get lost here, and I did.
I searched around – it’s easy and straight-forward. Thinking of one of my favorite authors, I typed in “Alcott” – thinking of Louisa May , author of Little Women. Amazingly, I got her and her dad, Bronson. A long list of available papers and titles by both came up. I chose one, clicked it and was taken to another site and the piece I was looking for.
I checked titles I’d been thinking about reading and I browsed topics. Found a ton of stuff I want to read. And knowing I would never have to dust or pack a single volume, I pushed download buttons. A couple of hours later, I came back to Earth, satiated.
